Saffron threads

Many people know a bit about saffron, but are thrown for a loop when saffron threads are mentioned. In a nutshell, saffron is the little thread at the center of a small purple crocus, where pollen catches and develops.

These threads are so rare and hard to cultivate because there are only three threads per flower. These threads are handpicked and dried before they are sold. The reason that saffron is the world’s most expensive spice is because it takes a lot of effort to get them and that it takes more than 13,000 threads to make just a single ounce of saffron.

Saffron can be purchased in a powder form or in thread form. Although the threads should be crushed before they are used in a recipe, there are advantages to buying the threads. Threads are usually fresher.

Also, it is possible that the saffron could be ground and mixed with other spices before you make the purchase. This means that you could be buying diluted saffron and be paying for much more than you should. Because of these reasons, buying saffron threads may be the better option.
