Saffron FAQs

Where is the best saffron grown?
This all depends on who you ask. By and large, Persian saffron and Spanish saffron are considered to be the two best types of saffron available. Although saffron has been growing in Spain for hundreds of years, it was actually brought there from Asia. Persian saffron, on the other hand, is indigenous to that area. It is for this reason that some consider it to be superior.

Why is saffron so expensive?
The main reason why is simply because it is difficult to grow and difficult to cultivate. Even if you plant hundreds of saffron crocuses, the fact is that it will only yield a small amount of saffron threads. There are three threads to each flower. In addition to this, the taste is so unique that culinary artists love to use it. A small supply and a large demand makes for expensive prices.

Are there any health benefits associated with saffron?
In the Western world, saffron is not used as much for medicinal purposes as it is in the Far East, but there still are occasions when it is used. One recent study concluded that saffron is actually able to improve your mood.
