Saffron crocus
Even though there could be a big return for investing
in and planting a saffron crocus, the procedure and process is complex.
Even though the crocus is well known for being one of the very first
flowers to bloom in spring, few realize that the saffron crocus does
not necessarily follow the same pattern. In fact, the saffron crocus
is more likely to bloom in the fall.
If you plan to cultivate a saffron crocus, find a spot that has a lot
of sun for a lot of the day as well as well-drained soil. If you can
do this and keep the crocus in a sheltered location you will be even
better off.
The drier and the calmer the area, the better off you will be. Avoid
planting in spots unsheltered from the wind. It is also important to
make sure that you are not in a place that stays wet in the summer time.
The bottom of a hill where there is a water runoff is a good example
of a place where they should not be.
Because this is a big investment, you need to make sure that you protect
the crocus from gophers or other animals that could get into it. A mesh
enclosure is a great way to keep critters out of the area. You can expect
a good saffron crocus harvest in the years when there are long, dry
summers.
