Persian saffron

Persian saffron is one of the main types of saffron grown and cultivated in the world. Spanish saffron is the other popular type. While saffron is not indigenous to Spain, it is indigenous to Asia. In fact, the common assumption is that the Mongols brought the crocus flower from Asia to Spain, where it flourished.

Persian saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. The main reason for this is simply because the spice must be harvested by hand. This is complicated by the fact that there are only three saffron threads per flower. It takes one full acre of Persian saffron blossoms to make just 10 pounds of saffron threads. This means it takes about 10,000 flowers just to produce one pound.

Because saffron is indigenous to Asia, Persian saffron is considered to be the highest quality saffron available on the market. Saffron is often used in a variety of Indian, Spanish, Mediterranean and Persian dishes.

Persian saffron is considered to be a great addition to a number of soups, pastas, risotto, paella and stews. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try it on other dishes as well.
